Alberta Micro-Generation Regulation

Under Alberta's micro-generation regulation (small-scale systems under 150 kW), exported solar is credited on the bill at a rate negotiated between the customer and their electricity retailer rather than a fixed regulated rate. Credits typically offset monthly bills, and any unused credits at year-end must be paid out in cash by the retailer. Because Alberta's electricity market is deregulated, the export credit and overall savings depend on the chosen retailer and rate plan - compare retailer micro-generation terms before signing.

Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP)

CEIP is a property-assessed clean energy (PACE) financing program available through participating Alberta municipalities (Calgary, Edmonton, Canmore, Lethbridge, and 20+ others). Residential property owners can finance roughly $3,000–$50,000 of solar and efficiency upgrades through their property tax bill, with fixed interest rates set per municipality and repayment terms up to 25 years. Availability and application windows vary by municipality - check your city or town for the current intake.

Municipal Solar Rebates

Several Alberta municipalities run their own solar rebates that can layer on top of CEIP financing and micro-generation credits. Amounts and intake windows change frequently - for example, some communities have offered $200–$450 per kW with caps in the $1,000–$15,000 range. Confirm the current rebate (if any) in your specific municipality before purchase.

Federal Programs (Greener Homes Loan & Affordability Program)

The Canada Greener Homes Loan (interest-free up to $40,000) stopped accepting new applications on October 2, 2025 - only previously approved loans are still being funded. Its replacement, the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP), launched in September 2025 and delivers no-cost retrofits through provincial partners for low- to median-income households; solar PV is federally eligible but each province sets its own technology list. Canada still has no federal investment tax credit equivalent to the U.S. ITC for residential solar.

Net metering: Alberta micro-generation regulation

Alberta's micro-generation regulation lets homeowners offset usage with solar and be credited for exports at the retailer's energy rate. Alberta's deregulated market means the export credit and bill savings vary by electricity retailer and rate plan, so retailer choice matters.
