That estimate is what the utility charges to connect you, and it is separate from what an installer quoted for the equipment going on your roof. Reaching that offer before you commit is the whole point of doing the paperwork in order.

After the offer comes the Electrical Safety Authority inspected installation and commissioning, then a signed Connection Agreement, and only then does Alectra install the bidirectional meter. The Connection Agreement is between you and Alectra rather than between Alectra and your installer, so read it rather than signing where the sticker points.

The 12 kW ceiling is newer than it looks. As of May 1, 2026 the Ontario Energy Board raised the simplified micro embedded generation threshold from 10 kW to 12 kW, which pulls more residential systems onto the streamlined path. If a quote you are considering lands just above 12 kW, ask what the extra capacity costs you in review time before you accept it.

What an exported kilowatt hour earns is a bill credit, not a cash payment. Ontario credits exports kilowatt hour for kilowatt hour at the retail rate through your distributor, and Alectra resets a credit balance carried for 12 consecutive unused months to zero at the end of that month. Alectra bills residential customers on time-of-use pricing, so the hour in which you avoid buying power changes what the avoided kilowatt hour was worth. That is the honest reason to price a battery, rather than simply buying a larger array.

What a Mississauga homeowner can actually apply for

The live provincial programme is Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program, which offers combined rebates of up to $10,000 for solar PV paired with battery storage. It launched in January 2025 and was expanded for the 2026-27 programme year, which runs April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027.

One condition on that programme bears directly on everything above. Homeowners who take its solar incentive are generally directed to a load-displacement configuration rather than full net metering. Those are two different ways of connecting the same hardware and they treat exported power differently, so confirm the current rules with your installer and with Alectra before you apply, rather than assuming the rebate and the Alectra net metering path stack.

Federally, the Canada Greener Homes Loan, interest free up to $40,000, stopped accepting new applications on October 2, 2025, and only previously approved loans are still being funded. Its replacement, the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, launched in September 2025 and delivers no-cost retrofits through participating provinces, which do not currently include Ontario, for low to median income households; solar PV is federally eligible, but each province sets its own technology list. Canada has no federal investment tax credit for residential solar, so do not build a budget assuming one appears.
