The rebate that is still available here
The Good Energy rebate pays $800 per kilowatt of generating capacity on a home renewable energy system, to a maximum of $5,000, and it applies territory-wide rather than being tied to a particular utility.
Off-grid systems and diesel communities remain eligible for it even while grid-tied micro-generation intakes are paused, which matters in Watson Lake specifically.
Claiming it requires invoices or receipts stating the capacity of the system in kilowatts along with proof of payment, and for a grid-tied system a signed Micro-generation Interconnection and Operating Agreement or a final approved electrical inspection report.
Confirm the current amount and the documentation required with the Yukon Energy Branch before letting a quote include the figure, since programme terms change and a stale number is worth checking.
What is not available
Compensation for electricity exported to the grid. Government of Yukon micro-generation intakes have been paused for all communities since December 2023 and no reopening date is published.
ATCO Electric Yukon, which serves Watson Lake, restricts new distributed energy resource connections, describing the current position as reflecting the need for technical solutions on the grid.
So a new grid-tied system here receives the rebate and the value of what the household consumes, and nothing else. A projection showing export revenue is describing a programme that is not open.
Nothing from the federal government either: the Clean Technology investment tax credit is limited to a taxable Canadian corporation or a real estate investment trust under Income Tax Act subsection 127.45(1).
Most households here control their own roof
Watson Lake housing is dominated by single-detached houses at 77 percent, which is well above the Whitehorse figure of 48.3 percent.
Semi-detached and low-rise units are the largest of the remaining categories at around 5 percent each, with row houses and duplexes at roughly 1 percent each.
So the structural obstacle that affects a substantial minority of Whitehorse households, needing a landlord or condominium board to agree, applies to very few people here.
That removes a step from the process. The decision is generally yours to make, which means the questions that remain are the economic and technical ones rather than the procedural one.
Designing for consumption rather than export
Watson Lake receives roughly 947 kWh per installed kilowatt per year on Natural Resources Canada figures, marginally below Whitehorse and with the same extreme seasonal shape.
With export worth nothing, the only generation that has value is what the household uses at the moment it is produced, so the system should be sized to your daytime load rather than to your annual consumption.
Ask what share of generation the model expects you to consume directly, and ask what it assumes happens to the rest. If the answer involves a credit, the model is wrong for a new system.
Ask for the production estimate month by month rather than as an annual total, and ask whether storage changes the picture enough to justify its cost given that it is the only way to shift generation in time here.
