Why solar in Yukon
A new Yukon applicant cannot currently sell surplus power to the grid, and that is the first thing to establish before anything else. Government of Yukon micro-generation programme intakes have been paused for all communities since December 2023 while the government and the utilities assess what the grid needs to absorb more renewable generation, and no reopening date is published. Becoming a micro-generation client requires a signed interconnection and operating agreement, so a grid-tied system installed today receives nothing for what it exports. The Good Energy rebate does still pay $800 per kilowatt of a home renewable energy system to a maximum of $5,000, and off-grid systems and diesel communities such as Watson Lake remain eligible. What that leaves for a grid-tied Yukon household is the rebate plus the electricity it displaces as it is generated, which makes self-consumption and storage the whole of the design. No federal tax credit helps: the Clean Technology ITC is restricted to a taxable Canadian corporation or a real estate investment trust under Income Tax Act subsection 127.45(1), so a homeowner cannot claim it however the purchase is financed.

Net metering: Micro-generation programme, intakes paused
A new applicant in Yukon cannot join. Government of Yukon micro-generation programme intakes have been paused for all communities since December 2023, while the government and the utilities assess what upgrades the grid needs to absorb more renewable generation; the page carrying that notice was last modified 22 January 2026. Becoming a micro-generation client requires a signed micro-generation interconnection and operating agreement with the utility, so a new installation today receives nothing for electricity exported to the grid, from either the utility or the government. Both utilities are covered: ATCO Electric Yukon serves Whitehorse and Watson Lake and says current restrictions on new distributed energy resource connections reflect the need for technical solutions, and Yukon Energy retails to Dawson City. Existing clients keep an annual Government of Yukon reimbursement each April, capped at 65 percent of the system's modelled annual generation, with no rollover. No reopening date is published.
