Your installer normally drives that paperwork, but you are the customer of record on it, so ask which stage the project is at when timelines slip.
The sequence also explains why panels on the roof do not mean a live system. The meter change is the last step, not the first, and it comes after inspection and agreement. Plan for a gap between the installation crew leaving and the system actually exporting.
Brampton's solar permit package and what it costs
Brampton has a dedicated Residential Solar Panels permit package, which makes the requirements unusually clear. Submissions need a roof plan showing panel layout and dimensions, a description of the existing roof construction including truss spacing or rafter sizing, and engineering details confirming the roof can carry the added load without adversely affecting its structure. If your installer cannot produce those without a site visit, they have not looked at your roof properly yet.
The Building Division's Standard Permit Application Service reviews solar applications within 10 business days, and as of February 2026 the permit fee is $326.21. That is a known, budgetable line rather than an open question, and it should appear in a quote rather than surfacing later as an extra.
A separate Electrical Safety Authority inspection is required before Alectra will connect the system. The municipal permit and the ESA inspection are two different approvals serving two different purposes: one says the roof can carry the array, the other says the wiring is safe to tie to the grid.
Brampton's housing stock and what it means for your roof
Brampton's housing is majority ground-oriented, and per the 2021 census single-detached houses make up about 53% of dwellings, 96,020 of 182,470. Semi-detached homes add about 14%, common in the 1980s to 2000s subdivisions, row houses about 13%, and apartments across all building sizes about 15%, concentrated near downtown and the major corridors.
For a homeowner that mix is mostly favourable. A detached house typically offers a full roof face to design around, and subdivision-era construction usually means documented truss spacing, which is exactly what the permit package asks for. Semi-detached and row homes still take an individual install but share a roofline, so the layout has to respect the property line and any shared chimney. Apartment dwellers need building ownership sign-off rather than a homeowner permit, which is a different process with a different decision maker.
Roof age is the variable to check before anything else. Panels are meant to stay up for decades, so if the shingles are within a few years of replacement, doing the roof first avoids paying to remove and reinstall the array later.
Heritage rules and who actually controls your roof
Outside heritage-designated properties, Brampton's housing stock is predominantly freehold, with no condo-board style restriction on rooftop solar. For most homeowners here the approval chain is the city and Alectra, not a board.
The exception sits downtown. Brampton's Main Street South Heritage Conservation District, covering the turn-of-the-20th-century streetscape near the core, has been under study for years without a finalized district plan or bylaw as of the city's most recent public update. If your property is in or near that area, the sensible move is to confirm its designation status with the city before you commission drawings, because a designated property brings an additional heritage approval into a project that would otherwise be routine.
Programs a Brampton homeowner can actually apply for
The provincial program worth knowing is Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program, which launched in January 2025 and runs its 2026-27 program year from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027, with combined rebates of up to $10,000 for solar PV paired with battery storage. Against a $326.21 permit fee and the cost of the array itself, that is the single largest lever available to a homeowner here, which is exactly why its condition deserves attention: homeowners taking the HRSP solar incentive are generally directed to a load-displacement configuration rather than full net metering. Confirm the current rules with your installer before applying, because the rebate and the export credit are not automatically compatible.
Federal support has narrowed. The Canada Greener Homes Loan, interest-free up to $40,000, stopped accepting new applications on October 2, 2025, and only previously approved loans are being funded. Its replacement, the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, launched in September 2025 and delivers no-cost retrofits through participating provinces, which do not currently include Ontario, for low to median income households, with solar federally eligible but each province setting its own technology list. There is no Canadian equivalent of the American residential solar tax credit.
Beyond those, some Ontario municipalities and local utilities periodically offer on-bill financing or local improvement charge programs that can apply to solar. Availability is local and changes, so ask what is currently open in your service area rather than relying on an article written a year ago.
