What article 195 allows in a Gatineau front yard

Flush mounting is a real design constraint, not a cosmetic one. The surplus bank and the clock that empties it

Exports are credited one for one in kilowatt hours into a surplus bank and drawn back down against later consumption. The credit is in energy rather than dollars, which means a kilowatt hour banked in June is still a kilowatt hour in January regardless of what happens to the rate in between.

The bank is reset to zero every 24 months, on 31 March of each even year. Two consequences follow. First, any balance still standing at the reset is settled at Hydro-Québec's average cost of supply, which sits well below the retail rate you pay to buy a kilowatt hour back, and the arrangement cannot produce a negative bill. Second, the reset falls on a fixed calendar date rather than on your own anniversary, so where in the cycle your system starts generating affects how much time your first accumulated bank has to be spent.

The design rule that comes out of this is to size the array to your household's annual consumption and no further. Surplus you consume within the cycle is worth the full retail rate. Surplus that is still sitting in the bank on 31 March of an even year is worth very little, and roof area dedicated to producing it has bought you nothing.

Grants and financing available in Gatineau

Hydro-Québec's LogisVert solar grant is the substantial one: $1,000 per kilowatt of installed capacity, capped at 40 percent of eligible project costs, which Hydro-Québec describes as typically working out to $5,000 to $6,000 on a residential system. The installation has to be completed on or after 30 June 2025, and the application goes through the LogisVert portal within 9 months of the installation date.
