Your electricity comes from Hydro-Sherbrooke
Sherbrooke operates its own municipal electricity utility. Hydro-Sherbrooke distributes power in the city, issues your bill, and runs whatever self-generation arrangement you end up on. Check that anything you read about solar in Quebec, and anything an installer tells you, actually applies to a Hydro-Sherbrooke account rather than to a Hydro-Québec one, because the two are not interchangeable on the points that decide a project.
The residential rate is Hydro-Sherbrooke's own Tarif D, set out in By-law 425. It uses the same two-tier block structure as the provincial residential rate, so the shape of the bill will look familiar, but the prices are the city's and the programme you apply to is the city's. The by-law also defines a net metering option, mesurage net, for self-producers, and Hydro-Sherbrooke's technical standards recognise photovoltaic systems as an autoproduction installation.
So there is a defined route for a grid-connected rooftop system here. It just is not the provincial one, and the difference matters most where the money is: in how exported kilowatt hours are treated.
What Hydro-Sherbrooke charges, and what solar removes
Three figures define a Sherbrooke residential bill. A network access charge of 46.154 cents for each day in the billing period. Then 7.065 cents per kilowatt hour for the first 40 kilowatt hours of each day. Then 11.142 cents per kilowatt hour for everything consumed above that daily threshold.
Take the access charge first, because it is the one people misread. It is billed per day, not per month, and no amount of solar removes it. It is the price of being connected to the network. A system that wiped out your entire consumption would still leave that daily charge standing, so any payback arithmetic that assumes a bill reaching zero is wrong on its first line.
The block structure is where a rooftop array does its work, and it works from the top down. Each solar kilowatt hour that displaces consumption above the daily 40 kilowatt hour threshold is worth 11.142 cents. Each one that displaces consumption below the threshold is worth 7.065 cents. The same panel, on the same day, is worth noticeably more when your household is running hard than when it is idling.
One detail that catches people out: the threshold is daily, and it resets every day. A monthly total on its own will not tell you how often you cross it, because a household with spiky consumption can pass 40 kilowatt hours on cold days and stay well under it on mild ones. If Hydro-Sherbrooke can give you daily consumption data for your account, that is a far better basis for sizing than a monthly average.
Net metering here is Hydro-Sherbrooke's, and you should ask it directly
Hydro-Sherbrooke's by-law defines a mesurage net option for self-producers, and its technical standards treat a photovoltaic system as an autoproduction installation. That much is established: there is a programme, and rooftop solar is the kind of thing it contemplates.
What this page will not do is tell you its terms. Hydro-Québec's option d'autoproduction, with its kilowatt hour bank and its 24 month reset, belongs to Hydro-Québec customers, and a Sherbrooke household is not one. Assuming the provincial arrangement applies here is the most likely single way to size a system wrongly in this city, because the export terms are precisely what decides whether a bigger array earns anything.
So put four questions to Hydro-Sherbrooke directly, and get the answers in writing before you fix a system size. How are exported kilowatt hours credited. Do credits carry forward, and for how long. What happens to an unused balance. What does interconnection involve, and what does it cost. An installer's summary is not a substitute for the utility's own answer on any of the four.
What a Sherbrooke roof produces, and who owns it
Natural Resources Canada puts Sherbrooke's photovoltaic potential at 1,148 kilowatt hours a year for each kilowatt of installed capacity at optimal tilt. That figure assumes a well-oriented, unshaded array. Shading from mature trees or a neighbouring building takes a bite out of it, a shallow or awkward pitch takes another, and a north-facing slope is not worth covering at any price.
36.9 percent of Sherbrooke dwellings are single-detached and 5.1 percent are semi-detached, so just over 40 percent of the stock offers a roof one household controls. 45.5 percent of dwellings are low-rise units, which are common in the older core sectors, and 3 percent are in high-rises.
For a large share of the city, then, the first question is not whether the roof suits panels but who is entitled to decide about it. In a low-rise building the roof is normally common property or the landlord's, so an array becomes a building decision, with a second question attached about which meter it would feed. Owners of the single-detached houses have no such problem; semi-detached owners share a roof plane with a neighbour and should settle placement and future re-roofing with them early.
Where Sherbrooke's zoning lets collectors go
Sherbrooke's zoning bylaw no. 1200, at article 4.2.18, treats the two mounting types differently. A ground-mounted solar collector is permitted only in the side and rear yards and margins, and not in the front yard. A roof-mounted collector is permitted with no stated orientation restriction.
The second half of that is the more useful fact, because it is a permission rather than a limit. The bylaw does not dictate which roof slope a collector may occupy, so if your sunniest plane is the one facing the street, the zoning text as written does not stand in the way. Confirm the current wording and your own zone's provisions with the city before you commit, but the starting position is a roof you are free to use.
Ground mounting stays available too, just not out front. If your roof is shaded, structurally unsuitable or already carrying other equipment, a side or rear yard array is the route the bylaw leaves open, and it hands back the freedom to choose tilt and orientation that a fixed roof plane takes away.
Grants: confirm eligibility before you budget for them
The substantial Quebec solar subsidy is Hydro-Québec's LogisVert grant. It pays $1,000 per kilowatt of installed capacity, capped at 40 percent of eligible project costs, which Hydro-Québec describes as typically $5,000 to $6,000 on a residential system. Installation must be completed on or after 30 June 2025, and the application has to reach the LogisVert portal within 9 months of the installation date.
It is a Hydro-Québec programme, and Sherbrooke households are Hydro-Sherbrooke customers. Confirm with the programme whether an account with a municipal utility qualifies before you put the grant in your budget. Ask early rather than late: a figure in the $5,000 to $6,000 range is a large enough share of a residential project that its presence or absence can decide whether you proceed.
Federal support is thinner than it was. Applications for the interest-free Canada Greener Homes Loan, worth up to $40,000, closed on 2 October 2025, and only previously approved loans are still being paid out. Its replacement, the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, has run since September 2025 and delivers no-cost retrofits to low and median income households through provincial partners; solar is eligible federally, though the technology list is set province by province. No federal tax credit for residential solar exists in Canada.
