In Saint-Georges, assume you need a permit
Saint-Georges takes a broad view of what needs authorisation. Except for painting, most construction and renovation work requires a permit or a certificate of authorization, and the city lists roof and exterior-wall renovation among the work it covers. For a homeowner that removes an argument you might otherwise waste weeks on: do not plan a project on the assumption that a roof-mounted array slips under the threshold. Plan on applying, and use the call to the city to confirm which of the two instruments applies and what the file needs.
The timing is where you have to be flexible. The city says processing can vary from a few days to a few weeks depending on the permit type and the season, which is honest but unschedulable. The seasonal note is the useful part: the city itself says the season affects processing, so ask which months are busiest before you decide when to file. If the installation date is important to you, submit early and treat the approval as the item that sets the date rather than the crew's availability.
Two practical protections. First, do not sign a contract that puts a deposit at risk against a permit date the city has never promised. Second, agree in writing who assembles and files the application and who follows it up, because an incomplete file is the most common reason an approval that should take days takes weeks.
What the panels produce and what that displaces
Natural Resources Canada's municipal photovoltaic potential table puts Saint-Georges at about 1,144 kWh a year for each kilowatt of installed capacity, on a well-oriented and unshaded surface. That is the number to multiply a quoted system size by before adjusting for your own roof. An unshaded slope facing generally south does best; east and west slopes still produce usefully but give up output; a north slope rarely justifies the hardware. Shade from a tree, a chimney or a neighbouring building costs the most because it lands in the middle of the day.
Residential billing runs on the two-tier Tarif D: a lower per-kWh price for roughly the first 40 kWh per day equivalent of the billing period, and a higher price above that. The first-block price is 7.065 cents per kWh, effective 1 April 2026. It is not a time-of-use rate, so there are no peak hours to avoid and no benefit in running the dishwasher at midnight. Solar takes consumption off the top of your usage, so the kilowatt-hours it removes are usually the ones charged in the upper block, which is worth checking against your own bills before you accept any savings estimate.
Winter shifts when the production arrives rather than how much of it there is over a year. Output concentrates around the summer months and a snow-covered panel produces nothing until the snow clears, which a steeper pitch does sooner. The credit bank below is the mechanism that moves that summer output onto a winter bill.
Applying to Hydro-Quebec, and the hold that can stop you
You do not apply for net metering yourself. Hydro-Quebec's option d'autoproduction is requested by a licensed electrician who is a member of the Corporation des maitres electriciens du Quebec, and that electrician submits the interconnection request. Ask each installer you are comparing which CMEQ member will sign the file and whether they are on staff or subcontracted, because that person sits on your critical path.
Approval is not guaranteed on demand. Hydro-Quebec can place an application on hold where the local circuit already carries heavy uptake from other self-generators. Nothing about your house changes that, and no installer can promise around it. The protection is sequencing: get the request filed before equipment is ordered, and settle in writing what happens to your deposit and schedule if the file is held.
Once you are enrolled, exported energy is banked as a kilowatt-hour credit and deducted from later consumption one for one. The bank is zeroed every 24 months, on 31 March of each even year, and any balance sitting in it at that moment is settled at a rate well below what you pay to buy the same electricity. Capacity is not what limits a house, since the ceiling on the option rose from 50 kW to 1 MW in 2026. Your own annual consumption is the ceiling that matters, so size the array against twelve months of your own kilowatt-hour totals.
Saint-Georges housing and who controls the roof
Saint-Georges has roughly 15,415 dwellings and 54.8 percent are single-detached houses, so just over half of homes have a private roof and a single decision-maker. A quarter of dwellings, 25 percent, are in low-rise apartment buildings, where the roof belongs to the building's owner or to a syndicate of co-owners rather than to a resident, and where the first document to read is the lease or the declaration of co-ownership.
Semi-detached houses are 11.3 percent of the stock, which is a substantial group and it changes the conversation. A semi-detached roof plane is usually continuous across the party wall, so the neighbour has a real interest in the fixings, the penetrations, and access for maintenance or a future re-roof. Sort that out in writing before a layout is designed. Duplexes add 4.5 percent, row houses 1.4 percent, and high-rise dwellings are a small but present 2 percent.
Because the city explicitly treats roof and exterior-wall renovation as permitted work, the sequencing point is a live one here. If your covering is near the end of its life, replace it before the array goes on, and get both scopes in front of the city at the same time so that one approval does not arrive long after the other.
Whether storage is worth it on a block rate
A battery earns most of its money by exploiting the gap between cheap and expensive hours, and Tarif D has no such gap. There are no peak periods on a two-tier block rate, so that case does not exist in Saint-Georges. The other common case, keeping your own surplus rather than exporting it, is also weak, because the net metering bank returns exported energy one for one. The grid stores it for you at parity, with no capital cost.
Backup is the honest reason to buy storage. A battery with correct transfer switching keeps chosen circuits running through an outage; a grid-tied array without storage shuts down during an outage no matter how bright the day, because it must not backfeed lines that crews may be working on. If continuity matters to you, say so at the quoting stage, since it changes the specification rather than adding a component at the end.
Price that decision on its own terms: how often your address loses supply, for how long, and what it costs you when it happens. Those are answerable questions, and answering them separately is more useful than folding a resilience purchase into an energy payback figure.
Grants and financing for a Saint-Georges project
Hydro-Quebec's LogisVert residential solar grant pays $1,000 per kW of installed capacity and covers up to 40 percent of eligible project costs, typically landing around $5,000 to $6,000 on a residential system. Installations must be completed on or after June 30, 2025, and the claim is filed through the LogisVert portal within 9 months of the installation date. Hydro-Quebec's own projection is that the grant brings a typical residential payback from 25 to 30 years down to roughly 10 to 12 years.
Because the grant is claimed after the installation rather than deducted from the invoice, the filing is a task somebody has to own. Decide in the contract whether that is you or the installer, and diarise the 9 month deadline from the installation date. A missed window cannot be reopened.
Federally the options have narrowed. The Canada Greener Homes Loan, interest-free up to $40,000, stopped accepting new applications on October 2, 2025, and only previously approved loans are still funded. The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program replaced it in September 2025, delivering no-cost retrofits through provincial partners for low- to median-income households; solar PV is federally eligible but each province sets its own technology list. Canada has no federal investment tax credit for residential solar, so the realistic package here is the provincial grant plus conventional financing.
