The reset date, and planning an install around it
Hydro-Québec's option de mesurage net banks surplus production as a kilowatt-hour credit, which offsets later consumption one for one. The bank is emptied every 24 months, on 31 March of an even year, and any positive balance standing at that moment is paid out at a wholesale price well below the retail rate you pay for electricity you buy back.
Because the reset falls on a fixed calendar date rather than an anniversary of your own enrolment, the season in which a system is commissioned changes how its first cycle plays out. A system energized in spring banks through the summer and draws that balance down through the following winter, arriving at a reset with little left, which is exactly what you want. A system energized in late autumn spends its first months drawing from the grid, then banks its first real surplus in a summer that may be closer to a reset. Neither case is a reason to delay a project for a year, but it is a reason to ask where in the cycle you are standing and not to be surprised when a first reset clears a small balance rather than paying out.
The strategic conclusion holds in every case: a Quebec system is paid by displacing electricity you would otherwise buy. Surplus above your own annual consumption is the least valuable output your roof can produce. Take twelve months of your own bills, size to that, and treat export as the leftover rather than the product.
How Tarif D changes what an array is worth
Tarif D prices electricity in two blocks: a lower price for roughly the first 40 kWh you use in a day, a higher price for everything beyond that. It is not a time-of-use rate. There are no on-peak or off-peak hours, so nothing about the hour at which you generate or consume changes the price of a kilowatt-hour, and advice written for provinces with time-of-day pricing does not transfer here.
What that means practically is that the value of an array depends on how much electricity your household uses rather than when. Solar reduces the day's total purchase, and the kilowatt-hours it removes come off the top of that total, so a house that regularly runs past the first block, as many do through a Quebec heating season, is displacing more expensive electricity than a house that rarely does. Two identical roofs with identical arrays can therefore show different bill effects purely because the households behind them consume differently.
Getting connected is the same at every address in the city. A licensed electrician who is a member of the Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec submits the connection request, and Hydro-Québec issues a conditional authorization and then a final one, with energizing permitted only after the final. The programme's capacity ceiling was raised from 50 kW to 1 MW in 2026, so regulation is not the constraint on a residential system.
Architectural rules, and what the city does not publish
Châteauguay has no US-style homeowners' association. Its constraints are municipal and architectural. Zoning Bylaw Z-3001 includes chapters on building architecture and maintenance, chapter 9, and on exterior development, chapter 10. A separate bylaw, Z-3600, governs plans d'implantation et d'intégration architecturale for the properties it covers, and the city recommends that PIIA applications be filed at least six weeks ahead of planned work.
That six-week recommendation is the most schedulable fact available here, so use it. If your address falls under Z-3600, treat six weeks as the minimum lead time between deciding on a layout and expecting to install, and understand that architectural review is the stage at which panel visibility and placement can actually change. Asking the city early whether Z-3600 covers your property is a short call that can save a redesign.
We have no verified record of Châteauguay's permit requirements or fees for solar work specifically, so we will not describe a process we cannot source. Confirm directly with the city whether your mounting method requires a permit or a certificate, what documents come with the application, and what the current turnaround looks like. Do that before ordering equipment rather than after.
Roofs in Châteauguay and what to check
At 63.2 percent single-detached, nearly two-thirds of Châteauguay's dwellings give the owner direct control of the roof. Low-rise apartment buildings under five storeys account for 26 percent, where the roof is common property and the syndicate of co-owners decides rather than an individual. High-rise apartments are almost absent at 0.4 percent. Semi-detached homes at 5.4 percent, duplexes at 3.5 percent and row houses at 1.3 percent share roof structure with another dwelling, which brings load path, flashing across a shared assembly and documented consent into the design conversation.
Natural Resources Canada's dataset puts Châteauguay at 1,192 kWh a year for each kW of installed capacity on an unobstructed installation, which turns a proposed array straight into an annual figure to compare against your own bills. A 6 kW system on that basis is near 7,150 kWh a year. A real roof lands off the benchmark for readable reasons: afternoon shade, an east and west split rather than a single south-facing plane, and winter snow cover that concentrates production in the warmer months.
Three physical checks decide most of the cost. How the usable planes are oriented and shaded, how much service life is left in the roof covering, and whether the electrical service has headroom for the array. If the covering is near the end of its life, replace it before the array goes on: removing and reinstalling panels later to re-roof costs more than sequencing the work correctly the first time.
Does a battery beat the credit bank?
For most Châteauguay households, no, and the reason is worth spelling out. The credit bank returns surplus one for one in kilowatt-hours, so exporting an afternoon's excess and drawing it back that evening, or six months later, is worth exactly what storing it in a battery would have been. Tarif D has no time-of-use periods either, so there is no cheap hour to charge in and no expensive hour to discharge into. The two mechanisms that make storage pay elsewhere are both absent here.
There is one exception, and it comes straight from the reset. If a system will consistently produce more over a year than the household uses, the surplus does not simply wait: whatever is still in the bank on 31 March of an even year is cleared and paid out at a wholesale price well below retail. In that situation, storing surplus for your own later use is worth more than banking it. But the cheaper fix is to not build past your own consumption in the first place, which is the same conclusion the sizing section reaches by a different route.
That leaves backup as the honest reason to buy storage in Châteauguay. A battery with the right switching keeps chosen circuits alive through an outage, and the question is how often your address actually loses supply and what that costs you. Decide it on that basis rather than on an energy payback, and you will not be disappointed by the arithmetic later.
Grants and financing available in Quebec
Hydro-Québec's LogisVert grant pays $1,000 per kW of installed capacity, capped at 40 percent of eligible project costs, which typically lands at $5,000 to $6,000 for a residential system. Eligible installations must be completed on or after June 30, 2025, and the claim goes through the LogisVert portal within 9 months of the installation date. It is claimed after the work rather than before it, so decide in writing who files the claim and keep the documentation the portal requires.
On the federal side there is less than there was. The Canada Greener Homes Loan, interest-free up to $40,000, stopped taking new applications on October 2, 2025, and only previously approved loans are still funded. The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, launched September 2025, delivers no-cost retrofits through provincial partners for low- to median-income households, with solar PV federally eligible but each province setting its own technology list. Canada has no federal investment tax credit for residential solar.
