Almost everyone in Quispamsis owns the roof
83.1% of dwellings in Quispamsis are single-detached houses, by far the highest share in this batch of New Brunswick cities. Only 3.5% are low-rise apartments and there are no high-rises at all. Semi-detached at 1.2%, row housing at 1.3% and duplexes at 4.4% together make up a small minority of the stock.
The practical effect is that the ownership question, which stops a lot of solar projects elsewhere in New Brunswick, mostly does not arise here. There is usually no landlord to persuade, no condo board meeting to wait for, and no shared roof plane whose structure has to be negotiated with the household next door. Most homeowners in Quispamsis can decide on their own timeline.
It also means the physical questions carry the whole decision. Which planes face near south, what shades them through the middle of the day, whether the shingles have enough life left to sit under an array for its full service life, and where the electrical service enters the house. Get those four answers before you start comparing quotes, because they are what the quotes will differ on.
Roof size is not what limits your system here
A Quispamsis roof returns about 1,129 kWh a year per installed kilowatt. On a detached house with an unshaded south face, roof area is rarely the binding constraint, and NB Power's 100 kW programme cap is nowhere near one for a household.
The limit is the credit rules. NB Power credits exports one for one at the volumetric rate you would otherwise pay, but credits only roll forward until March 31, when the balance resets to zero and nothing is paid out. So generation beyond a year of your own consumption is given away, no matter how much roof is left over.
That turns sizing into an exercise in reading bills rather than measuring rafters. Twelve months of consumption, electric heat included if you have it, sets the number. A large detached roof means you have the option to build to that number instead of being squeezed below it, which is a genuine advantage, but it is not a reason to build past it.
One more thing the credit rules settle: NB Power does not split credits into tiered or time-of-use rates, so there is no cheap hour and no expensive hour. Nothing about your daily routine has to change for the arithmetic to work.
What the town and the province want before work starts
Quispamsis requires a building permit for residential construction and renovation. Its public permits page does not mention solar panels specifically and does not publish a review-time target, so both the category your project falls under and the wait involved are things to confirm with the town rather than infer from a fee schedule.
Two provincial requirements sit on top of the town's. An electrical wiring permit is required, and the New Brunswick Department of Public Safety must inspect the installation. NB Power will not authorize the connection without them, and the system cannot legally be energized until NB Power has issued written approval and a compatible meter is installed.
Ask your installer to name all three approvals and say who files each one. An assurance that they take care of the permits does not tell you whether the town, the province and the utility have each been dealt with, and the gap usually shows up at the point where you wanted the system running.
The money side, and what changed in 2026
The rebate most people ask about has closed. NB Power's Total Home Energy Savings Program covered residential solar PV at $200/kW up to a $3,000 ceiling on a 15 kW system, and solar enrolment ended on May 27, 2026. If a quote in front of you still deducts it, the quote is stale and the bottom line is wrong.
The federal Clean Technology ITC is still in place for businesses, but not for you: the Income Tax Act limits it to taxable Canadian corporations and certain trusts, not individual homeowners. Eligibility is the whole question with it, so confirm your own situation before treating it as money in hand.
With the provincial rebate gone, the value of a Quispamsis system is entirely in the electricity it displaces. That puts the weight back on sizing, which is the one part of this you actually control.
