Row housing, and where your roof ends
12.8% of Oromocto dwellings are row housing, the highest row-house share among the 12 New Brunswick cities researched here, and another 9.8% are semi-detached. Both mean a roofline that carries on past your own walls. 60.7% are single-detached, and 14.3% are in low-rise apartment buildings where the roof belongs to the building rather than to a tenant.
On a continuous roofline the electrical work stays entirely yours. The array feeds your service panel and your meter, nobody else's supply is involved, and your neighbours' bills are unaffected by it. The structure is the shared part: rafters that may be common, a roof plane whose boundary is not always obvious from the ground, and a future re-roof that becomes a multi-household decision once panels sit on one section of it.
So the work to do first is boundary work. Get the property line and the roof structure confirmed, have the installer mark exactly where mounts and penetrations will land, and get any agreement with the neighbours recorded in writing. It is a short conversation before the design is fixed and an expensive one afterwards.
Yield, and how big a system to build
An Oromocto array produces roughly 1,145 kWh a year for every kilowatt installed. A 5 kW system lands near 5,700 kWh a year and an 8 kW system near 9,200. That is an annual total: output is concentrated in the long days either side of midsummer and a panel under snow contributes nothing until it clears.
The size that makes sense is set by your bills, not by your roof. NB Power credits exports one for one against what you would otherwise pay, but the credit balance resets to zero every March 31 and nothing is paid out for the remainder, so annual production beyond annual consumption is given away. The programme's 100 kW cap never binds on a house.
On a row house or a semi, roof area is smaller and the useful planes are fewer, so the sizing conversation runs the other way: the roof may cap the system below your consumption. That is not a reason to skip the project. It just changes what the array is doing, from covering your usage to reducing it, and it changes which quotes are worth comparing.
Batteries, and why the credit structure matters
NB Power does not split net metering credits into tiered or time-of-use rates. There is no expensive hour to avoid and no cheap hour to charge in, which removes the main bill-based reason to add a battery. In a market with time-of-use pricing, storage earns its keep by moving energy from a cheap hour into an expensive one. Here there is no gap to move it across.
The one for one credit also means the grid already does much of what a battery would do for your bill. Power you export earns a credit that offsets power you draw back later, right up to the March 31 reset, so a battery mainly changes what happens when the grid itself is down rather than what appears on your statement.
That makes backup the honest reason to buy storage in Oromocto, not savings. If you do, price the battery on its own merits, because the federal Clean Technology ITC will not reduce the cost: the Income Tax Act limits that credit to taxable Canadian corporations and certain trusts rather than individuals.
Permits and approvals for an Oromocto install
Oromocto publishes building permit categories for houses, garages, decks and similar projects, but its permits page does not mention solar panels specifically and does not publish a review-time target. So the category your project falls under and the time it will take are both questions for the town rather than things you can look up before you call.
The provincial and utility requirements are fixed regardless of the municipality. An electrical wiring permit is required, the New Brunswick Department of Public Safety must inspect the installation, and the equipment has to be certified. NB Power targets 10 business days to review the net metering application itself, and then the installation, inspection, AMI meter swap and connection typically take 30 to 90 business days between them.
Worth knowing on cost while you plan: NB Power's Total Home Energy Savings Program, which paid $200/kW toward residential solar up to a $3,000 ceiling on a 15 kW system, closed to solar enrolment on May 27, 2026. It is not available for a new project and should not still be sitting in a current quote.
