Do not assume the re-roofing exemption covers solar
Camrose requires a Building Permit for constructing, renovating or adding to a building. Two exemptions sit next to that rule: maintenance-only re-roofing or re-siding does not need one, and neither does work under $5,000. A rooftop solar array is not maintenance re-roofing, and a residential system is not a project that comes in under that threshold, so both exemptions fall away. Anyone telling you a permit is unnecessary because panels go on the roof has misread the page.
The second permit is electrical. Camrose requires an Electrical Permit to install, alter, extend or add to an electrical system, and a grid-tied solar system's wiring is squarely within that. Expect the two permits to run alongside each other and ask the City in what order it wants them, because the answer determines whether your installer can book the crew with confidence.
On timing, the City states that building permit processing takes approximately 5 to 10 business days depending on the project. That is a genuinely useful figure by Alberta standards, but read it for what it is: a processing estimate for the building permit, from a complete submission, not an end-to-end figure covering the electrical permit, inspection scheduling or your utility's interconnection approval. Plan the whole sequence, not just the fastest part of it.
Heritage designation is opt-in, with one planning overlay
Camrose has no homeowners associations, and its heritage regime is voluntary rather than imposed. An owner may apply for Municipal Heritage Designation, which goes to Council for a bylaw, so nothing lands on your property without your having asked for it. Four properties across the whole city hold Alberta Provincial Heritage Designation, which puts the scale of the constraint in perspective for most homeowners.
The one area with a planning overlay worth knowing about is Augustana, the neighbourhood near the University of Alberta Augustana campus, which is covered by an Area Redevelopment Plan intended to keep infill sensitive to the area's historic character. That plan is aimed at redevelopment and infill rather than at rooftop equipment, but if you live within it, a call to the City before finalising a design is cheap insurance. Elsewhere in Camrose the constraint on a solar project is the permit pair, not a design review.
Strong yield, but exports are not worth retail
At 1267 kWh per kW per year, a 6 kW array corresponds to roughly 7,600 kWh annually and a 10 kW array to about 12,700 kWh, before deductions for orientation away from south, low roof pitch, shading and winter snow. Good sun makes the case for solar here, but it does not change how the power is valued.
Alberta's Micro-generation Regulation credits your exports at your retailer's energy rate, negotiated between you and that retailer rather than fixed by a regulator. Every kilowatt-hour you import, by contrast, carries that energy rate plus transmission, distribution, riders and local access charges. Those delivery charges apply to imports whatever your export volume, and no export offsets them. Exported power is therefore worth materially less than the power it eventually buys back.
That has a specific consequence for sizing, and it cuts against instinct. A strong yield tempts homeowners to fill the roof, but a system that generates far beyond household daytime consumption converts the surplus into credits at the lower export value. Credits do accumulate against your bills and any unused balance must be paid out in cash by the retailer at year end, so nothing is forfeited, but the cash value is set at the export rate rather than at what you would have paid to import. The best return usually comes from matching generation to consumption and shifting flexible loads, laundry, dishwasher, electric vehicle charging, into daylight hours.
One wires company, many retailers to compare
FortisAlberta Inc. distributes electricity in Camrose. It owns the network and administers the Microgeneration programme through which your interconnection is applied for and tracked in the PowerClerk portal. You do not choose your wires company and cannot change it, so its role is procedural: get the application in, get approval, connect.
Your retailer is the part you control, and under Alberta's deregulated market it is where the money is decided. Because export credit terms are negotiated rather than regulated, two identical systems in Camrose can return different amounts purely on the basis of the contracts behind them. Get micro-generation terms in writing from several retailers and compare the credit rate, whether it floats, how credits roll month to month, the year end cash-out, the contract length and any exit fee. Do this before the system is ordered, not after it is running.
Nearly a fifth of Camrose homes are apartments
Single detached houses make up 62.3% of Camrose dwellings, and those owners hold the roof decision outright. The city's largest secondary housing type is low rise apartments at 19.7%, and for residents there a solar project is a building ownership decision requiring landlord or condominium board sign-off rather than an individual permit. High rise apartments are a minimal 0.7% of the stock.
Semi detached homes at 6.9% and row housing at 5.6% share a roofline or party wall with a neighbour, and duplexes account for a further 2.5%. In each of those cases the array layout, the flashing detail near the shared structure and the question of future roof maintenance all need settling with the neighbour, and with the condominium corporation where one governs the building, before design is finalised.
Financing and rebate programmes to check
Federal support is the piece most likely to be misquoted to you, so start there. The Canada Greener Homes Loan, which lent interest free up to $40,000, closed to new applications on October 2, 2025, and only previously approved loans are still being funded. Its replacement, the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, launched in September 2025 and delivers no-cost retrofits through participating provinces, which do not currently include Alberta, to low and median income households. Solar PV is federally eligible under it, but each province publishes its own technology list, so it does not follow automatically. Canada has no residential investment tax credit equivalent to the United States version.
Provincially, the Clean Energy Improvement Program is the substantive financing route. It is property assessed clean energy financing, repaid through your property tax bill rather than as a personal loan, at fixed rates set by each participating municipality, over terms up to 25 years, for roughly $3,000 to $50,000 of solar and efficiency work. Since participation and intake windows are set municipality by municipality, confirm whether an intake is currently open before you count on it.
Municipal rebates can sit on top of both. Some Alberta communities have offered around $200 to $450 per kW with caps in the $1,000 to $15,000 range, though these programmes open and close frequently enough that a figure from last year proves nothing about this year. Verify with the City before purchase rather than relying on an installer's summary.
