What an Airdrie roof actually produces
NRCan's photovoltaic potential dataset models a well-oriented fixed array in Airdrie at about 1,287 kWh a year for every kW installed. On a 7 kW system that is roughly 9,000 kWh in a modelled year, before shading, snow cover and normal equipment losses are taken off. That annual figure is what a design should be judged on, not a peak summer output, and it is the number to ask an installer to justify with a layout rather than a headline.
Orientation and shading do most of the rest. South-facing planes collect the most over a year, east and west planes spread production across the day and give up some annual total, and north faces rarely justify the hardware. Shade around the middle of the day costs disproportionately, because panels wired in a series string follow the worst-lit member unless the design breaks them up with optimisers or microinverters. Snow on the glass stops a panel until it clears, which the annual model already assumes for part of the winter.
FortisAlberta, PowerClerk and who actually pays you
FortisAlberta Inc. is Airdrie's wires company. A microgeneration interconnection application is submitted and tracked through FortisAlberta's PowerClerk portal, which at least means the status of your connection is something you or your installer can look up rather than chase by phone. Ask for the portal reference on your application so you can follow it yourself.
FortisAlberta is not your retailer. Under Alberta's deregulated market a separate company bills you for the electricity itself, and you can change that company without touching the wires connection. This is the part homeowners most often get wrong, and it matters here more than anywhere else on the bill, because the retailer contract is what sets the value of every kilowatt hour your array exports.
What Alberta credits your exports at
Under the province's Micro-generation Regulation, exported electricity is credited monthly at your retailer's energy rate. Imported electricity is billed at that energy rate plus transmission, distribution, riders and local access charges, and the export credit never offsets those. The arithmetic that follows is simple and often overlooked: a kilowatt hour you send out and buy back later costs you the delivery charges twice over in effect, so exports and imports are not interchangeable.
Alberta has no province-wide residential time-of-use rate, which removes the usual advice about shifting loads to cheap overnight hours. Here the reason to shift a load is not the clock but the array: energy consumed while the sun is on the panels avoids the full delivered rate, whereas energy exported earns the energy rate alone. Daytime dishwashing, laundry and EV charging is the free version of that optimisation, and storage is the paid version, displacing a fully delivered kilowatt hour in the evening rather than earning an export credit for it in the afternoon.
Two rules round it out. The export credit is negotiated between you and your retailer rather than set by regulation, so micro-generation terms genuinely differ and deserve comparison before you sign anything. And credits left unused at year end must be paid out in cash by the retailer, so they do not roll forward indefinitely.
Permits, drawings and the inspection before connection
Every solar photovoltaic installation in Airdrie requires an Electrical Permit. A Building Permit is additionally required if new structural elements are added to support the array, which is the trigger worth clarifying early: a straightforward roof mount and a design that adds framing or a ground structure are not the same application.
Applications ask for site plans, electrical diagrams and, where applicable, structural details, and work cannot begin until the permits are approved. The inspections that have to happen before the system is connected to the grid are booked through the myAIRDRIE portal, so the City sits on both ends of the process: approval at the start and inspection before the connection is energised.
Airdrie publishes no review turnaround for these permits, so there is no target date to hold anyone to and no honest way to promise one from outside. What that leaves in your control is submission quality. A complete package with the drawings and structural details the City asks for is the difference between one review and three, and it is reasonable to ask an installer how many Airdrie permits they have pulled before.
Your roof, and Airdrie's unusual share of row houses
About 65% of Airdrie's occupied private dwellings are single-detached, a high share, so most homeowners here control the roof and the permit without a board involved. What stands out is the row house share of about 15%, larger than in Calgary or Edmonton, where it is about 10% in both. Low-rise apartments are about 12%, and high-rise apartments are effectively absent at about 0.2%.
That row house share changes the advice for a meaningful slice of the city. A row house roof usually has a narrower south-facing section, shared along the block, so the array is smaller and the fixed costs of a job spread across fewer panels. It also means the condominium bylaw governing exterior changes is the document that decides the question, since Alberta has no US-style homeowners associations. Get that answer before you get a design, not after.
On a detached home the questions are the familiar ones: shingle age and remaining life, structural capacity for panels plus snow, how much of the best plane is already occupied by vents and stacks, and whether adding structural elements to improve the layout tips you into a Building Permit as well as an Electrical Permit.
Financing and programs to confirm before you buy
Alberta's main financing route is the Clean Energy Improvement Program, a property-assessed scheme that finances roughly $3,000 to $50,000 of solar and efficiency work through the property tax bill, at a fixed rate set by the municipality, over a repayment term of up to 25 years. It operates only in participating municipalities, and the program's own list names Calgary, Edmonton, Canmore and Lethbridge among more than twenty, so check whether Airdrie has an open intake before assuming it applies to you.
Municipal solar rebates elsewhere in Alberta have historically run around $200 to $450 per kW with caps between $1,000 and $15,000. They differ by community and their intake windows change frequently, so treat any figure you are quoted as something to verify with the city directly.
Federal support is thinner than it once was. The Canada Greener Homes Loan stopped accepting new applications on 2 October 2025 and now funds only previously approved loans. Its replacement, the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, delivers no-cost retrofits through participating provinces, which do not currently include Alberta, for low- to median-income households, with solar PV eligible federally but each province setting its own technology list. Canada has no residential investment tax credit equivalent to the American one, so nothing in your quote should assume a federal percentage back.
