PUC Distribution Inc. is the local distribution company for Sault Ste. Marie, and it is the utility that reviews your connection, installs the bi-directional meter and applies credits to your bill. It operates under Ontario's provincial net metering framework: your exports are credited kWh for kWh at the retail electricity rate against future bills, unused credits carry forward for up to 12 months, and there is no cash payout for annual net excess.
One provincial change from May 1, 2026 is worth knowing before you settle on a system size. The Ontario Energy Board raised the simplified micro embedded generation threshold from 10 kW to 12 kW, which means a larger set of residential systems now qualifies for the streamlined connection process rather than a heavier review. If your consumption points to a system near that boundary, it is worth asking your installer what the difference in process looks like on either side of it.

PUC residential customers can be billed on time varying rates, and that shapes what your generation is worth. Electricity you consume in the house at the moment it is produced offsets the rate you would have paid at that hour, while an exported kWh becomes a credit spent later. If your household uses most of its electricity in the evening, that gap is the case for adding storage, and it is a calculation to run on your own bill rather than a generic example.
The permit rule that catches Sault Ste. Marie homeowners
Sault Ste. Marie requires a building permit for new construction, additions, alterations and re-roofing. That last item is the one worth planning around. Solar panels are warranted for decades, so if the roof covering under the array is close to the end of its life the right sequence is to re-roof first and mount panels on a new surface. What the local housing mix means for your install
About 65% of Sault Ste. Marie's 32,530 dwellings are single detached houses. Some Ontario municipalities and local utilities also run financing arrangements from time to time, such as local improvement charges or on bill financing that can be applied to a solar project. Availability is local and changes, so ask what is currently offered in the PUC service area rather than assuming it exists or that it does not.
