Three ways to connect a Pickering array
Elexicon Energy gives Pickering homeowners three connection types, and they are genuinely different products. Net Metering is the familiar one: excess generation earns a bill credit, carried forward for up to 12 consecutive months. A Non-Exporting connection means generation must stay at or below your own consumption, so nothing crosses back onto the grid and there is no credit to earn. A Backup Generator connection covers an array that exists to carry the house through an outage rather than to offset day to day consumption.
The choice is not cosmetic. Under net metering the array is sized against your annual electricity use, because a surplus generated in June is meant to be spent in January. Under a non-exporting connection the array is sized against your daytime load instead, since anything you cannot use in the moment is throttled rather than banked, and a system built for export economics will spend much of the summer curtailed. Ask which one your quote assumes. If the quote does not say, it has not been designed for either.

Elexicon runs residential connections through a simplified micro-embedded generation stream, and the Ontario Energy Board raised the threshold for that stream from 10 kW to 12 kW on May 1, 2026, so more residential systems now clear the streamlined path than did a year ago. Confirm the connection type and the available capacity before equipment is ordered, not after it lands on the driveway.
What a Pickering roof produces in a year
Natural Resources Canada's municipal photovoltaic potential dataset puts Pickering at about 1,164 kWh a year for each kW of panel capacity installed. On that basis a 6 kW array models at roughly 7,000 kWh a year and a 9 kW array at roughly 10,500 kWh. Treat those as the top of the range for your address rather than a forecast: the figure describes a well oriented, unshaded array, and yours may be neither.
Three things pull the number down, in rough order of how much they cost you. Orientation comes first, since an east or west facing plane gives up a meaningful share of what a south facing one collects. Shading comes second, and it does not need to be dramatic: a chimney or a neighbour's mature tree across part of the array through the afternoon takes a bite out of every sunny day, not just some of them. Snow comes third, and mostly shows up as flat stretches in midwinter rather than as a season long loss.
Because Elexicon bills on time-of-use, when you use electricity matters alongside how much you generate. Power consumed in the house while the array is producing displaces electricity at whatever rate applies in that hour. Power exported becomes a credit you have to spend later, inside the carry-forward window, and Ontario pays no cash for annual net excess. Sizing against a year of your own consumption, rather than against how many panels the roof can physically hold, is what keeps that from becoming a problem.
One practical check before any design is drawn: how old the roof covering is. Panels are warranted for decades. If the shingles are near the end of their life it is cheaper to replace them first than to pay later for a removal and reinstall.
What Pickering's housing mix means for your roof
Statistics Canada's 2021 structural type data puts single-detached houses at 59.6% of Pickering dwellings. For that roughly 60% the roof is yours outright, there is usually more than one usable plane to choose between, and the approvals conversation is with the city and with Elexicon, nobody else.
Row houses are about 15% of dwellings. They are not ruled out, but the usable south-facing section is narrower, which can cap how many modules physically fit and therefore cap system size regardless of what your consumption would justify. Semi-detached houses, about 8%, generally still allow an individual install, but the roofline is shared with a neighbour, so anything running toward the party wall needs coordinating before it is drawn.
High-rise apartments are about 9% of Pickering dwellings, and there the roof is not yours to decide about at all. The decision belongs to the building owner or the condominium corporation, and the useful first step is asking whether roof access is even available before you spend time collecting quotes. The answer can be no for reasons that have nothing to do with solar.
Permits and heritage in Pickering
We do not have solar-specific permit guidance published by the City of Pickering in our verified fact set, so this page is not going to describe a process or quote a turnaround for one. Ask the City's building division directly, before you sign an installation contract: whether a roof-mounted array needs a building permit, what the submission has to contain, and what it costs. An installer who has worked in Pickering recently should be able to tell you, but get it confirmed by the city rather than taken on trust.
Whatever the city says about the structure, the electrical side is a separate track. Electrical Safety Authority requirements apply to the wiring, and an Elexicon connection is not energised without the ESA paperwork behind it. A building permit and an electrical notification are two different filings with two different bodies, and a project can clear one while still waiting on the other.
Ontario has no US-style homeowner associations, so nobody objects to panels on aesthetic grounds alone. What exists instead is heritage. Pickering has a Heritage Pickering Advisory Committee whose mandate under the Ontario Heritage Act is to identify sites and structures worth conserving and to advise Council on heritage matters. If your property is designated, or you have reason to think it might be under consideration, raise it before the design is fixed rather than after, because a heritage review can push panels off a street-facing plane and that changes the yield the whole quote was built on.
The Ontario programme that interacts with your connection type
The Home Renovation Savings Program is Ontario's flagship residential energy programme, launched in January 2025 and expanded for the 2026-27 programme year running April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027. It offers combined rebates of up to $10,000 for solar PV paired with battery storage. There is a catch that matters more in Pickering than in most places: homeowners taking the HRSP solar incentive are generally directed to a load-displacement configuration rather than full net metering. That is essentially the same design logic as Elexicon's non-exporting connection, so the rebate decision and the connection decision are one decision, not two. Confirm the current rules with your installer before applying.
Federally the picture has narrowed. The Canada Greener Homes Loan, interest-free up to $40,000, stopped accepting new applications on October 2, 2025, and only previously approved loans are still being funded. Its replacement, the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, launched in September 2025 and delivers no-cost retrofits through participating provinces, which do not currently include Ontario, for low- to median-income households. Solar PV is federally eligible under it, but each province sets its own technology list, so eligibility in principle is not the same as eligibility in Ontario. Canada still has no federal investment tax credit for residential solar equivalent to the one in the United States.
Below that, some Ontario municipalities and local utilities periodically offer financing, such as a local improvement charge or an on-bill arrangement, or efficiency programmes that can extend to solar. Availability is local and changes often, so ask what is currently offered in your service area rather than working from a list published last year.
