Three ways to connect a Pickering array

Elexicon Energy gives Pickering homeowners three connection types, and they are genuinely different products. Net Metering is the familiar one: excess generation earns a bill credit, carried forward for up to 12 consecutive months. A Non-Exporting connection means generation must stay at or below your own consumption, so nothing crosses back onto the grid and there is no credit to earn. A Backup Generator connection covers an array that exists to carry the house through an outage rather than to offset day to day consumption.

The choice is not cosmetic. Under net metering the array is sized against your annual electricity use, because a surplus generated in June is meant to be spent in January. Under a non-exporting connection the array is sized against your daytime load instead, since anything you cannot use in the moment is throttled rather than banked, and a system built for export economics will spend much of the summer curtailed. Ask which one your quote assumes. If the quote does not say, it has not been designed for either.

What a Pickering roof produces in a year

Natural Resources Canada's municipal photovoltaic potential dataset puts Pickering at about 1,164 kWh a year for each kW of panel capacity installed. On that basis a 6 kW array models at roughly 7,000 kWh a year and a 9 kW array at roughly 10,500 kWh. Treat those as the top of the range for your address rather than a forecast: the figure describes a well oriented, unshaded array, and yours may be neither.

Three things pull the number down, in rough order of how much they cost you. Orientation comes first, since an east or west facing plane gives up a meaningful share of what a south facing one collects. Sizing against a year of your own consumption, rather than against how many panels the roof can physically hold, is what keeps that from becoming a problem.

One practical check before any design is drawn: how old the roof covering is. Panels are warranted for decades. If the shingles are near the end of their life it is cheaper to replace them first than to pay later for a removal and reinstall.

What Pickering's housing mix means for your roof

Statistics Canada's 2021 structural type data puts single-detached houses at 59.6% of Pickering dwellings. For that roughly 60% the roof is yours outright, there is usually more than one usable plane to choose between, and the approvals conversation is with the city and with Elexicon, nobody else.

There is a catch that matters more in Pickering than in most places: homeowners taking the HRSP solar incentive are generally directed to a load-displacement configuration rather than full net metering. That is essentially the same design logic as Elexicon's non-exporting connection, so the rebate decision and the connection decision are one decision, not two. Federally the picture has narrowed. The Canada Greener Homes Loan, interest-free up to $40,000, stopped accepting new applications on October 2, 2025, and only previously approved loans are still being funded. Its replacement, the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, launched in September 2025 and delivers no-cost retrofits through participating provinces, which do not currently include Ontario, for low- to median-income households. Solar PV is federally eligible under it, but each province sets its own technology list, so eligibility in principle is not the same as eligibility in Ontario. Canada still has no federal investment tax credit for residential solar equivalent to the one in the United States.

Below that, some Ontario municipalities and local utilities periodically offer financing, such as a local improvement charge or an on-bill arrangement, or efficiency programmes that can extend to solar. Availability is local and changes often, so ask what is currently offered in your service area rather than working from a list published last year.
