That rolling year, not any single month, is the unit your system should be designed against.

Elexicon Energy serves the built up city and Hydro One serves the rural remainder of the municipality, a legacy of amalgamation that shows up on the bill rather than on any map most homeowners have seen. For addresses inside the Elexicon Energy service area, Elexicon handles both distribution and net metering, so a single utility approves the connection, changes the meter and applies the credits. Connecting a system under 12 kW follows Elexicon's Micro-Generation Connection Process, which is the streamlined route intended for residential rooftop arrays rather than the heavier review a commercial generator would face. Elexicon also serves Ajax, Pickering, Port Hope and Whitby, so the process is a well travelled one.
Elexicon credits exported solar power to your bill as a 1:1 kWh credit, carried forward for up to 12 consecutive months. Two words in that are worth reading carefully. It is a kWh credit rather than a cash payment, so the value of what you export tracks the retail rate you would otherwise pay. And the carry forward window is a rolling one, which means a credit balance built in July is meant to be spent within the year that follows, not banked indefinitely. Both point to the same design conclusion: size to your own annual consumption.
One provincial change works in your favour on system size. As of May 1, 2026 the Ontario Energy Board raised the simplified micro embedded generation threshold from 10 kW to 12 kW, which lines up with the ceiling on the micro-generation route. If your consumption points to a system near that boundary, ask your installer what the process difference looks like on either side of it before settling the design, because the paperwork and the timeline are not the same.
Who controls the roof in Belleville

Federal support has narrowed and older advice circulating online is out of date. The Canada Greener Homes Loan, interest free up to $40,000, stopped accepting new applications on October 2, 2025, its funding is fully committed and only previously approved loans are still being funded. Its replacement, the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, launched in September 2025 and delivers no cost retrofits through participating provinces, which do not currently include Ontario, for low to median income households; solar PV is eligible federally but each province sets its own technology list. Canada has no federal investment tax credit for residential solar equivalent to the American one.
Local financing is worth a question rather than an assumption. Some Ontario municipalities and utilities periodically offer arrangements such as local improvement charges or on bill financing that can be applied to solar, and availability changes by service area and by year.
