Oakville Hydro's ten-step interconnection process
Oakville Hydro connects residential rooftop solar as a Micro generator, meaning 12 kW or less, and it publishes the route as a ten-step process. The steps you will actually feel are these: initial contact with the utility, an application, an impact assessment and connection offer, a signed interconnection agreement, drawing approval, installation, Electrical Safety Authority approval, and then connection to the grid.
Two of those steps deserve attention before you sign an installation contract. The impact assessment and connection offer is where the utility tells you what connecting your specific address involves, and drawing approval is a gate that sits between the paperwork and the physical work, so a design has to satisfy the utility before a crew is useful on site. Costs for interconnection and metering are set by Oakville Hydro's Conditions of Service, which is a separate document from anything your installer quotes.

Homeowners who ask the distributor their own questions, rather than relaying everything through a salesperson, tend to find out earlier when a project needs rethinking.
One thing this page does not cover is the town's own building permit requirements for a rooftop array, because we could not verify them from the Town of Oakville's published guidance. Ask the town directly what municipal approval a roof-mounted system needs at your address, and treat that as separate from the utility's process and from the Electrical Safety Authority approval inside it.
What the array produces and what exports are worth
Oakville's solar potential is about 1,160 kWh a year for each kW of panel capacity installed, from Natural Resources Canada's municipal photovoltaic potential dataset. That describes a well oriented, unshaded array, so read it as the top of the range for your address. Orientation, shading from trees or a neighbouring roof, and the pitch of the plane you use will all take something off it.
Ontario credits exported solar through your local distribution company kilowatt hour for kilowatt hour at the retail electricity rate, applied against future bills. Unused credits carry forward for up to 12 months, and there is no cash payment for net annual excess. In practice that makes your own annual consumption the ceiling worth designing to: capacity beyond it produces credits that expire rather than money that arrives.
Oakville Hydro bills residential customers on time-of-use pricing, so what a kilowatt hour is worth depends on when it is used or avoided. Southern Ontario output is strongly seasonal, with summer days producing several times what a short December day does and snow occasionally suppressing winter production altogether. Those two facts together are why self-consumption and storage carry more weight here than a flat-rate comparison would suggest, and why a battery should be assessed against your household's daily load shape rather than assumed to be worthwhile.
Oakville's housing mix and what it means for your roof
Oakville's housing stock is majority single-detached at 58.6% of dwellings. That is the straightforward case: a private roof under your own control, usually with more than one plane to choose between, and no neighbour to coordinate with before work starts.
The next largest category is row houses at 17%, concentrated in the town's newer subdivisions. A row house roof gives you a narrower usable south-facing face, and the attached units on either side can shade it at the ends of the day. That combination often caps system size before your electricity consumption does, so the honest sequence for a row house is a site measurement first and a system size second.
High-rise apartments make up 12.2%, concentrated near the GO stations and downtown, and low-rise apartments under five storeys add about another 6%. In both cases the roof belongs to the building owner or condominium corporation, not to a resident. If you live in one, the productive first step is asking whether the building has any appetite for a rooftop project at all, because no amount of homeowner planning substitutes for that decision.
Heritage districts and the town's heritage permit process
Oakville names Downtown Oakville and Trafalgar Road among its heritage conservation district review and update initiatives, and the town's Planning and Development department maintains a dedicated Heritage Permits process for heritage-designated properties. A rooftop array is a visible change to a building's exterior, which is exactly the kind of alteration that process exists to review.
That is a review rather than a prohibition. What tends to be at issue is how the change reads from the street, so where panels sit on a roof becomes part of the conversation rather than a detail settled afterwards. A design drawn purely for the sunniest plane may need adjusting, and adjusting it later costs schedule.
Find out early whether your address is designated or sits inside a district under review, because that determines which department you are dealing with and how long the approval leg of the project should be. For most Oakville addresses none of this applies, and the approvals that decide your timeline are the town's building requirements and Oakville Hydro's interconnection steps.
Rebates, loans and the battery pairing question
Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program is the live provincial offer, with combined rebates of up to $10,000 for solar PV paired with battery storage. It launched in January 2025 and was expanded for the 2026-27 programme year, which runs April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027. Note the shape of it: the headline amount is for solar and storage together, so a solar-only project is a different conversation from a paired one.
Before you build a budget around it, settle one condition. Homeowners taking the programme's solar incentive are generally directed to a load-displacement configuration rather than full net metering. Load displacement and net metering treat exported power differently, so the configuration that maximises the rebate is not automatically the configuration that maximises what your exports earn through Oakville Hydro. Confirm the current rules with your installer and with the utility before applying.
The federal picture has narrowed. Applications for the Canada Greener Homes Loan, which was interest free up to $40,000, closed on October 2, 2025, and only loans approved before that date are still being funded. What replaced it has a different shape: the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program launched in September 2025 and delivers no-cost retrofits through participating provinces, which do not currently include Ontario,, aimed at low to median income households, with solar PV federally eligible though each province decides its own technology list. There is no Canadian equivalent of the residential solar tax credit available in the United States.
Some Ontario municipalities and local utilities also run financing from time to time, such as local improvement charges or on-bill financing. These are local and they change, so ask what is currently offered in your service area rather than relying on a list.
