What a Guelph roof produces in a year
Guelph's modelled yield is about 1,142 kWh a year for each kW of installed capacity, from Natural Resources Canada's photovoltaic potential data. A 6 kW array therefore models at roughly 6,850 kWh a year, a 9 kW array at roughly 10,300 kWh, and a system at the 12 kW simplified connection ceiling at roughly 13,700 kWh. Treat those as the ceiling for a clean, south-facing, unshaded roof rather than a prediction for yours.
Orientation, pitch and shade do most of the damage to that number in practice, and shade is the one people underestimate: an obstruction that clips the array for part of every afternoon costs you across the whole season. Compare quotes on modelled annual kWh for your own roof rather than on panel count, because two installers can fit the same panels onto very different planes.
Alectra bills residential customers on time-of-use pricing, which changes what your production is worth depending on when it happens. Electricity you use in the same instant you generate it is never metered as an export and never metered as an import, so it sidesteps the credit system entirely. That is why running heavy loads during daylight, or pairing the array with storage so evening use draws on the battery rather than the grid, is usually the highest-value change you can make after the panels are up.
Alectra net metering: credits, expiry and connection
Alectra credits your solar exports monthly against your consumption, and Ontario values those exports kWh for kWh at the retail electricity rate rather than at a lower export price. Unused credits carry forward for up to 12 months and then reset to zero. Alectra cannot pay cash for excess generation, because provincial rules do not allow it, so credits are only ever worth what you later draw from the grid.
That expiry is the single most important constraint on system size in Guelph. A system built to cover a summer surplus you cannot use by the following year is buying panels that produce credits you will never spend. Size against your household's annual consumption, and if you are planning an electric car or a heat pump in the next couple of years, size for that consumption rather than adding panels twice.
Systems of 12 kW or less use Alectra's simplified micro-generation path: a preliminary consultation, then a Form C application, an Offer to Connect, and an Electrical Safety Authority inspection before the bi-directional meter goes in. The threshold moved on May 1, 2026, when the Ontario Energy Board raised the simplified micro embedded generation limit from 10 kW to 12 kW, so more full-size residential systems now qualify for the streamlined route. If a quote pushes past 12 kW, ask what that does to the application process before you agree to it.
Heritage permits in Guelph's conservation districts
Guelph has four Heritage Conservation Districts: Brooklyn and College Hill, Downtown Guelph, Ontario Reformatory, and the Ward. If your home is inside one, heritage designation does not block alterations outright, but changes that affect a property's protected heritage attributes need a heritage permit on top of the ordinary building permit. Visible rooftop work can fall into that category.
The practical consequence is a second approval and a second set of opinions about where the array goes. Because the concern is usually visibility, a design that puts panels on a rear or side plane can be less contentious than one facing the street, and that choice has real production consequences if the street-facing plane is the sunny one. Establish which planes are workable before you pay for a full design, not after.
If you are outside all four districts, none of this applies and the roof is yours to decide on. Because the districts cover older parts of the city rather than a scattered list of individual addresses, checking is a matter of confirming which district boundary, if any, your street sits inside.
What Guelph's housing mix means for your roof
Fewer than half of Guelph's dwellings are single-detached houses, so the mix matters more here than a simple roof count suggests. Single-detached houses are about 48.6 percent of dwellings, which is the case installers design for most easily: a full roof under one owner, with room to lay out an array without splitting it awkwardly across planes. Semi-detached homes are about 4.5 percent, and there the shared party wall and often a shared chimney become design constraints, both for panel layout and for where conduit and racking can run.
Row houses are about 15.2 percent of Guelph dwellings, more than three times the semi-detached share. Row roofs give narrower planes and often shared structure with the units on either side, which caps array size and can complicate anchoring, so the realistic system on a row house is usually smaller than the same household's consumption might justify. That does not make it a bad project, but it does mean the yield arithmetic above should be run against the roof you actually have.
Apartments account for a large minority of Guelph homes: about 13.7 percent in buildings under five storeys and about 11.5 percent in buildings of five or more, roughly a quarter of the city between them. Rebates and financing for Guelph homeowners
The Home Renovation Savings Program is Ontario's main residential energy incentive. It launched in January 2025 and was expanded for the 2026-27 program year, which runs April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027, offering combined rebates of up to $10,000 for solar PV paired with battery storage. The pairing requirement matters in Guelph specifically, because Alectra's time-of-use billing and the 12-month credit expiry both reward using your own generation rather than banking it, and storage is the tool that does that.
There is a wrinkle to settle before you apply. Homeowners taking the HRSP solar incentive are generally directed to a load displacement configuration rather than full net metering, so the rebate and the Alectra credit arrangement described above are not automatically a package. Ask your installer which configuration they intend to apply for and what it means for how your bill is calculated afterwards.
Federal support is thinner than many people assume. The interest-free Canada Greener Homes Loan of up to $40,000 stopped accepting new applications on October 2, 2025 and now only funds previously approved loans. The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program replaced it in September 2025, delivering no-cost retrofits through participating provinces, which do not currently include Ontario, for low- to median-income households, with solar PV federally eligible but each province choosing its own technology list. Canada has no federal investment tax credit for residential solar. Some Ontario municipalities and utilities also run periodic financing such as local improvement charges or on-bill repayment, and what is open changes frequently, so ask while you are gathering quotes.
