Estimate uses regional averages + conservative assumptions. Actual numbers vary by roof, utility, and tax situation. The federal Greener Homes Loan closed to new applicants Oct 2025; the real savings are provincial rebates.

What's behind the number?

  • Rate
CA$0.13/kWh - Canadian residential blended average. Your actual utility rate is usually higher in winter and lower in summer; we use the annual blended number.
  • Sun hours
Province-specific peak sun hours per day. ON 3.9 · BC 3.6 · AB 4.7 · QC 3.8. Real installs vary by roof tilt + shading; your installer's site visit produces the actual number.
  • System size
Back-solved from your bill: annual kWh ÷ (sun-hours × 365). Clamped to 3–12 kW so we don't show absurd residential sizes.
  • 25-year range
Low end: annual savings × 22 yrs (assumes some rate volatility + panel degradation). High end: × 30 yrs × 1.15 (assumes modest utility rate escalation). The truth is usually mid-range.

Average cost of solar panels in Canada (2026)

Installed residential solar in Canada typically runs about CA$2.80 to CA$3.30 per watt before any rebates, so a common 8 kW system lands roughly in the CA$20,000 to CA$25,000 range. The exact price depends on your province, roof, and equipment. Because Canada has no federal solar tax credit for homeowners, most of the value comes from provincial net metering and rebates. Here is how the average installed cost per watt compares by province.

Province Avg cost / watt Typical system Est. cost before incentives Typical payback
Alberta CA$2.80/W 8 kW ~CA$22,500 ~11 yrs
British Columbia CA$3.00/W 7 kW ~CA$21,000 ~13 yrs
Manitoba CA$3.00/W 8 kW ~CA$24,000 ~14 yrs
New Brunswick CA$3.20/W 7 kW ~CA$22,500 ~11 yrs
Newfoundland and Labrador CA$3.30/W 7 kW ~CA$23,000 ~13 yrs
Nova Scotia CA$3.10/W 8 kW ~CA$25,000 ~11 yrs
Ontario CA$2.90/W 7.5 kW ~CA$22,000 ~11 yrs
Prince Edward Island CA$3.20/W 7 kW ~CA$22,500 ~10 yrs
Quebec CA$3.00/W 7 kW ~CA$21,000 ~18 yrs
Saskatchewan CA$2.90/W 8 kW ~CA$23,000 ~12 yrs
